The Vision
We were tasked with transforming an existing commercial building into a brand-new Volkswagen dealership with a mechanic shop and underground parking.
Demolishing part of the existing building, we relied on our blasting team to precisely target the areas for removal while ensuring the integrity of the remaining building and the safety of our crew. In the mechanic shop, we used precast concrete wall panels, which are highly durable, with excellent resistance to impact, corrosion, weathering, and abrasions. This also expedited our construction timeline.
We encountered several challenges, from identifying contaminated sites to encountering hardpan while excavating, but through nimble problem solving, we were able to arrive at effective solutions and complete the project, on time and on budget.
The Results
- Responded to the discovery of hardpan while excavating by altering our excavation sequencing, bringing in additional excavation equipment, and building a vertical well water collection and discharge system.
- Adjusted our concrete footing design to address clay at the bottom of the excavation, importing a volume of rock to cap the clay.
- Identified, reported, and cleaned up contaminated sites with a controlled interruption to the work.
- Successfully completed the build and met Volkswagen’s rigorous standards for their facilities, finishes, and level of craftsmanship.
